Miriam Gordon-Stewart - soprano

Australian soprano Miriam Gordon-Stewart has gained recognition across four continents for her powerful instrument and dramatic vulnerability, specialising in the repertoire of Wagner and Strauss. Described in the French press as “a genuine singer-actress”, she has performed over 40 leading roles at major opera houses including the Sydney Opera House, Hamburg State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Châtelet (Paris), Korean National Opera and at the Bayreuth Festival. She has also performed in concert with the Dresden Philharmonic, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Lisbon, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

In 2015, Miriam co-founded Victory Hall Opera in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she holds the position of Artistic Director. She debuted for VHO in 2016 as The Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier, and in 2017 as Isolde in Drugsong by Jennifer Hoyt Tidwell. She also made her directing debut in 2017 with a production of Rameau’s Sympathy.

In 2018, she will perform in the World Premiere of Marginalia, a song cycle by Matt Boehler, and as Soprano 1 and Magna Peccatrix in Mahler’s 8th Symphony with the Griffith Conservatorium.

Recently, Gordon-Stewart returned to the Deutsche Oper Berlin for performances of Gertrude in Hänsel und Gretel, conducted by Donald Runnicles, performed Beethoven Symphony No.9 and Marie in Act 3 of Alban Berg's Wozzeck, conducted by David Robertson, and sang The Virgina Mary in Melbourne Bach Choir’s The Kingdom by Elgar. Gordon-Stewart also triumphed as Alice in Falstaff for Korean National Opera - the production was broadcast nationally on KBS TV.

In 2011-12, Miriam appeared as Rosine Kampf in Le Bal at the Châtelet. She returned to Hamburg as Betty Joy in Bliss. She performed Suor Angelica in Il Trittico in Hannover and made her role debut as Leonore (Fidelio) for State Opera of South Australia.

Miriam was a resident soloist with the Hamburg Staatsoper from 2005-2009. There her roles included Jenůfa, Madame Lidoine (Dialogues des Carmélites), Alice Ford (Falstaff), Micaëla (Carmen), Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus), Helena (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), the Countess (Le Nozze di Figaro), Elettra (Idomeneo), Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), Mimi (La Bohème), Liù (Turandot), Arabella, Freia in Das Rheingold and Helmwige in Die Walküre in the Premiere of Hamburg’s new Ring Cycle.

Gordon-Stewart performed at the Bayreuth Festival as Helmwige, and has performed throughout Europe with the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Mannheim, Kassel, Graz, Wuppertal Opera, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Orquestra Gulbenkian in Lisbon and with the Dresden Philharmonic.

As a member of Opera Australia from 2001 to 2005, Miriam starred as Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Miss Jessel (The Turn of the Screw), Rosalinde, Leila (The Pearl Fishers) and Mimi, amongst many others.
