Katherine Day - piano

Katherine Day commenced piano studies at the age of four, and began winning prizes in local eisteddfods aged eight. Katherine went on to become a music scholar at University High School, where she performed her first concerto solo aged seventeen, playing Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1. Katherine pursued tertiary studies at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), gaining Bachelor, Honours and Masters degrees there. In 1999 Katherine won the VCA’s annual concerto competition, and performed Ravel’s Concerto for Orchestra and Piano left hand with the combined forces of the VCA orchestra and Orchestra Victoria.

After the VCA, Katherine moved to London to study at the Royal College of Music where she was a finalist in the College’s concerto competition, performing Gershwin’s Concerto in F.

Since returning to Australia, Katherine has appeared as a concerto soloist with Australian orchestras seven times, most recently Rhapsody in Blue with the Macquarie Philharmonia. Katherine will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Canberra Concerto Orchestra later this year, and has plans to tour to the USA in 2012. She is currently coordinator of Piano at Eltham College in Research.
