Edwina Hookey - violin

Edwina Hookey began studying the piano at four years of age and the violin at ten. She has her Associate Diploma on both instruments and holds her Licentiate Diploma with Distinction on violin. Edwina has studied with Jean Lehmann, Julian Quirit, Deborah Fox, Mark Mogilevsky and Miwako Abe and is currently in her third year of a Bachelor of Music Degree (Performance Specialisation) at Melbourne University, studying under William Hennessy.

Edwina worked closely with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2004, taking part in an extensive training program during which she performed with the orchestra and studied under her mentor, Matthew Tomkins from the Flinders Quartet. For 2005, she was awarded with a solo recital, and a chamber music concert in the University's Lunchtime Concert Series. Recently she won the Faculty's Mozart Competition, and has recorded and performed as a member of the Australia Pro Arte Ensemble at Federation Square.

Chamber Music is Edwina's favourite musical medium, and in 2004 she was a founding member of the Clarendon Quartet and Trio con Brio. As part of the Quartet, Edwina worked and performed with the Henschel Quartet, performing by invitation at the Rippon Lea Estate under the Team of Pianist's Chamber Music Concert Series. She has twice been a finalist in the Melbourne University Chamber Music Competition, winning the Audience Award. She has been a prize winner in the Percy Grainger Performance Prize, the Glen Prior Memorial Chamber Music Prize, and the Olwynn Game Memorial Award for Chamber Music. Most recently she returned from the Australian Festival of Chamber Music where she performed as part of Trio con Brio, and as concertmaster of the Chamber Orchestra under the direction of John Harding. She was lucky enough to work closely with David Pereira, Caroline Henbest, Max McBride and the Goldner String Quartet. In addition the trio worked extensively with Australian Clarinettist, Kathy McCorkill. The trio has also performed as �Rising Stars� of Performing Arts for Rotary International.

Edwina was the Guest Concertmaster of the Zelman Symphony for its final concert of 2005 on Saturday 26 November, performing the demanding solo violin part of Rimsky-Korsakov's Sheherazade. More recently, she participated in the Hepburn Springs Swiss-Italian Festival concert on the afternoon of Sunday 23 April 2006 in Daylesford.
