Barbara Jane Gilby - violin

Violinist Barbara Gilby has always had the desire to be an "all rounder" in the music world. After graduating with a BMus from the Canberra School of Music and a Mus.M (violin performance) from Boston University she held a number of positions with German orchestras before returning to Australia as Concertmaster of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in 1985.

During her time in Tasmania, Barbara was not only an important figure in the development of the orchestra, but also worked with the Tasmanian Symphony Chamber Players and the Trigon Ensemble – a string trio with Janet and Brett Rutherford. The Chamber Players collaborated with Geoffrey Lancaster to produce a number of ground-breaking recordings of baroque repertoire (including Vivaldi’s Four Seasons) for the ABC Classics label.

Since 2000, Barbara has been a member of the teaching staff of the ANU School of Music and she is currently Concertmaster of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra and an active chamber musician, particularly with pianist Susanne Powell. Barbara has created one of the most interesting gardens in Canberra's south which she shares with her two happy cats, Kaspar and Gremlin, and she maintains her interest in German language by keeping Amazon Deutschland afloat.

In Australia there are far more high quality performers than there are concerto opportunities, so when such an opportunity presents itself, Barbara is keen to grasp it and enjoy it.

Barbara Jane Gilby has appeared with the Zelman Symphony in the following concerts:
