Andrew Kawai - oboe

Currently, a Year 10 student and a recipient of an academic-music scholarship at Scotch College, Andrew Kawai has won over 50 awards in music competitions including 1st prize in the Open Section of the 2013 Australasian Double Reed Competition. He has also received a Concerto Finalist Prize in 2013 and 2014 in the ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards and was awarded the 2013 People’s Choice Award and the Best Recital Prize. In May 2014, he received an Honorable Mention in the 66th Prague Spring International Music Competition.

He has performed as a soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Youth Orchestra, the Australian National Academy of Music Chamber Orchestra, and La Fraternita di Solisti chamber orchestra.

Studying Oboe with Jeffrey Crellin since 2010, Andrew completed his Associate Diploma in Oboe with Distinction and Licentiate Diploma in Oboe at the age of 13. He also completed his Licentiate Diploma in Cello with Distinction and is currently working on his Piano Licentiate exam. Andrew has recently performed in the 25th Port Fairy Music Festival, where he collaborated with musicians from the Ensemble Liaison and the Flinders Quartet.

Andrew has performed in master classes with Diana Doherty, Alexei Ogrintchouk, Gordon Hunt, Nicholas Daniel, Seung Eun Lee, Douglas Boyd and Alban Gerhardt, and in June 2014 he attended the Académie musicale de Villecroze in France under the guidance of Professor Maurice Bourgue.
