French Connections

One hundred years ago, the great French composer Claude Debussy died. This concert, one day before his centenary, is of music by Debussy and those influenced by him. Debussy’s music was revolutionary, in synergy with the Impressionist painting movement. We will perform his most famous orchestral work, the iconic Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, and his Sarabande.

Fauré, Debussy’s senior, began the move away from German-inspired formal structures to more lyrical, evocative music, to be heard in his Pelléas et Mélisande Suite. Debussy’s younger contemporary, Ravel, also revelled in the jazz style sweeping Paris at the time, heard in his Piano Concerto in G. We are delighted that highly regarded Melbourne pianist Caroline Almonte will be playing it for us. Caroline graduated from the Juilliard School in New York, is a member of the Sutherland Trio, has played with major orchestras such as the MSO, and has accompanied many world famous soloists.

The climax of this program will be Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, full of colour and mystery, a fitting tribute to Debussy.
